Maymester FAQ

What is Maymester?
Maymester is a new academic term during which students can earn college credit. Like TTC’s FastForward courses during the Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters, Maymester courses cover all the content in a compressed period of time. This year, Maymester runs May 5--May 23.
Is Maymester appropriate for every student? What students would benefit from Maymester?
No, Maymester is not appropriate for every student. The shortened time frame means that students must be able to master competencies quickly. Students should not take Maymester courses in subjects they expect to have difficulty in. The longer Summer or Fall Semester would be more appropriate. Students who are self-disciplined and can handle the concentrated focus on a single subject will benefit from Maymester, as will students who cannot attend school all summer. Students coming home from other colleges, for example, might want to pick up some extra credits but may have travel or work plans that keep them from enrolling in a five- or nine-week course.
How many classes can (should) I take in Maymester? What if I’m working full time in May?
You can take only one class during Maymester. If you are working full time in May, even one class may not be advisable. That would be the equivalent of working full time during a regular semester while taking a 15-hour course load. You might want to consider courses offered for the full Summer Semester instead.
Is it possible to receive financial aid for Maymester if not taking other summer classes?
If you have a Pell Grant and you have not been a full-time student for both Spring and Fall Semesters, you might have eligibility left that you can apply to Maymester. Because you cannot take more than three hours, you will not be eligible for Lottery-Funded Tuition Assistance.
If I am taking other summer classes, will Maymester tuition be included with summer tuition?
Yes, but payment for your Maymester class is due April 19 if you register between Feb. 18 and April 18; payment is due May 5 if you register between April 20 and May 5.
What college facilities will be open during Maymester other than classrooms?
Specifically, will the Learning Resource Centers (libraries), The Learning Center, Testing Center, computer lab and student cafeteria be open during Maymester? The libraries at Main and Palmer and the Testing Center will be open. Because the computer courses offered during Maymester are either online or in a dedicated computer classroom, we do not anticipate opening a computer lab. Maymester students who need to use a computer on campus can go to the library. Student cafeteria hours, if any, will be scheduled when we have a better sense of how many students to expect.
Will my instructor be available outside of regular class hours for additional help?
Yes. Full-time faculty teaching Maymester classes will hold office hours for Maymester students; adjunct faculty will be available before and after classes.
How do I register for a Maymester class?
The same way you register for any summer class: online if you are a returning TTC students; by appointment with your advisor if you are a new student; in an Orientation Center or Admissions office if you are a nondegree student. Just be sure to register before May 2. If you register and pay before April 18, you will have the best shot at getting the course you want, but registration will continue through May 2.
When is tuition due for my Maymester class?
If you register before April 18, tuition is due Saturday, April 19, at noon. If you register later, tuition is due no later than 6:30 pm on Monday, May 5.
