Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) > State Exam Information
State Exam Information

Effective July 1, 2000, the State of South Carolina adopted the national registry (NR) as the method of testing and certification for EMT-Basics in South Carolina.  The change to NR testing and certification necessitated changes in the administrative process for certification and testing.

Under the new system and certification, the EMT Basic student will be required to do the following:

Present a money order for $20 at the NR written examination.  The money order should be made payable to the National Registry of EMTs.  Application can be downloaded from National Registry website provided below.

Register with the appropriate regional EMS office a minimum of 7-10 working days to the scheduled practical examination.
Present a money order for $45 dollars at the time of registration for the practical examination.  The money order should be made payable to the appropriate EMS regional office.
Scheduling of NR written and practical examinations will be based on the EMT Basic course start and end dates.

Candidates from S.C. approved EMT Courses who have successfully passed the National Registry examination and have received subsequent national registration are eligible to receive a S.C. state certification.
