When do students begin exploring possible career options?
Through the Personal Pathways to Success initiative, elementary school students will participate in a variety of career awareness activities. Middle school students will engage in career exploration and assessment surveys that will help them to identify their interests and talents.
When do students create an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP)?
In the eighth grade, students, along with their parents or guardians, will meet individually with counselors and draft an initial IGP, identifying a cluster of study they are interested in exploring and mapping out courses they may take in high school. These selections can change.
Will students be able to revise the IGP?
Students, along with their parents or guardians and guidance counselors, will review and update the IGP every year until graduation.
When do students declare a major?
By the end of the 10th grade, students declare a major, which guides their course choices in a specific direction.
Can students change their selected major (or cluster)?
Students are never locked into a specific cluster or major. They can change a major if they find that the one they selected is no longer of interest to them.
Do all students have to declare a major?
Students need to declare a major by the end of the 10th grade; however, completion of a major is not a requirement for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Can students take more than one major?
Yes, with careful planning beginning in the ninth grade, it is possible to complete more than one major.
Is it possible to complete a major while continuing to participate in other electives (i.e., fine arts, physical education, ROTC, etc.)?
Yes, students may explore a broad range of experiences and interests during their high school years. There is ample opportunity to complete a major and participate in other areas of interest.
